Dushore, the largest borough in the county was first settled by John Mosier in 1825. He owned most of the land upon which the town now stands. This settlement was first called Moshier Hollow and later Jackson Hollow until Josiah Jackson named it Dushore, a corrupted form of its real founder’s name Aristide Aubert Du Petit Thouars, exile from the French Revolution. Du Petit Thouars, was an officer in the French navy, who escaped from Portugal where he was held a prisoner, and joined the French colony called Asylum near this place. He was given a tract of land, built a cabin and made an improvement. When the French exiles were permitted to return to France he accompanied them, re-entered the French navy, was assigned to the command of a ship of the line, and was killed at the Battle of the Nile. Dushore was incorporated from Cherry Township in 1859 by the Sullivan County Court. In 1901 the population was 783.
